Racing: Petter Northug (NOR) takes gold and crowns himself the king of Vancouver
Thanks to victory over 50 kilometers in classical style Petter Northug (NOR) crowned himself the king of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver 2010. The extraordinary Norwegian athlete claimed victory in the final competition ahead of Axel Teichmann (GER) and Johann Olsson (SWE).
Even before the race Petter Northug already had a complete medal set in his bag. Gold in the Team Sprint, Silver in the Relay and Bronze in the Sprint were his medals so far. By winning the gold medal in the ultimate in cross country he became the most successful athlete at the Olympic Games 2010. "It's been a dream for me - these Olympics have been great," jubilated the double Olympic champion.
During the final race everything was on offer just like during the other competitions over the last few days at the Whistler Olympic Park (CAN): thrill, excitement and really big sports. The dominating actor: the satisfied and smiling 24-year old from the country of the Vikings. "It was a great race for me. I had to stick to my plan to stay in the group. When Axel (Teichmann) attacked over the hill I knew I had to stay with him and I just had to give 100 percent at the end," explained Northug about his tactics. On the finishing stretch he once more showed his sprinting qualities and had his nose in front at the end.
Unlucky man of the day was Dario Cologna (SUI) who fell 100 meters before the finish whilst in third position. Thus his dreams for a second medal were crushed.
